Bourbon Gents World Cup 2019: 1st Round
1st Round Wrap Up
The 3rd annual Bourbon Gents World Cup is under way, and what a 1st round that was.
As usual, the event kicked off with a major star performing at the opening ceremony. This year we were graced with the lovely Ariana Grande, who revealed to the Gents that she is a big fan of Eagle Rare and will be rooting for it in this years competition.
Once the ceremony was out of the way though it was down to the serious business of the match ups themselves. Over 1200 votes were cast and we would like to thank all of you for taking part and supporting your favourite bourbon.
Highlights of this round
Two time winner, and reigning world cup holder, Four Roses Single Barrel had no problems overcoming Rock Hill Farms.
The standard Buffalo Trace yet again caused a 1st round upset. Many may remember last year it beat Wild Turkey Rare Breed, and this year it knocked out Mav’s favourite Noah's Mill.
Another of the Gents favourites - Wild Turkey Decades (runner up in our bourbon of the year) was knocked out by Maker’s Cask Strength.
The biggest winning margins of the round both involved Blanton’s. Blanton’s Gold and Blanton’s Single Barrel destroyed their opposition (Jim Beam Double Oak and Joseph Magnus) by huge margins of 90% to 10% and 91% to 9% respectively. Interestingly, should they both win their next matches they will be up against each other in the 3rd round. One to watch.
The strangest event however, was in one of the last ties of the round - Stagg vs Four Roses Yellow Label. Now the result itself wasn’t strange, Stagg easily won the tie. The strangeness was that 17% of the vote went to Yellow Label… 17% of people voting actually think entry level Four Roses is better than George T. Stagg? We can only assume there was some sort of Twitter glitch…
The full results of the 1st round, and the draw for the second round, can be seen below in our World Cup wall chart.
2nd round key ties
There are some very interesting match-ups to look forward to. Our pick of the round is the battle of the Taylor’s, with E.H Taylor Small Batch Vs its bigger brother the Single Barrel. It’s bound to be a close one but our money is on the Small Batch.
Four Roses Single Barrel will have to overcome some serious opposition if it is to advance one step closer to a 3rd World Cup in a row, as it’s up against Pappy 23. What a match that will be.
Two heavyweights of the bourbon world meet in the second round with George T Stagg (Bourbon Gents bourbon of the year) facing off against E. H Taylor Four Grain (Jim Murray’s Whiskey of the year). Who will the public side with here? The Gents or Mr Murray?
Whatever happens it will be exciting stuff so don't miss your chance to vote - just head over to our twitter account - the 2nd round starts on Monday 11th March at 18:00 GMT.
