About Us

1920s Gentlemen

Although the site looks shiny & new, the Bourbon Gents have been around for a while. Here is a bit about our journey so far:

Ok, maybe we haven’t been around quite as long as the picture suggests…

Starting slightly later than the 1920s, Mav and Mr Pie are two bourbon aficionados who have been immersed in the world of whiskey since before they were legally allowed to drink it.

The Gents met while working in an incredibly boring job that left us plenty of time to bond over a love of scotch. Over the years this lead us to branch out into the world of bourbon, and wow were we shocked.

You see, bourbon doesn’t have the greatest reputation over on this small island we call Britain. Mainly because the only bourbon most people here have encountered is Jack Daniel's, and then normally only ever mixed with coke. Things have gotten a bit better since the bourbon boom and resurgence, occasionally you will see Maker’s Mark and Woodford in some of the nicer bars, but still it's quite limited. So it came as quite a shock to find that, not only was bourbon quite excellent, we preferred it to scotch!

After this news got out we were deported from Britain and our families refused to speak to us. However, instead of returning cap in hand and apologising for our error, we doubled down and decided to spread the word and launch a website and podcast dedicated to bourbon.

That was 7 years ago, and we were truly complete amateurs of the bourbon world back then. With nothing but a passion to talk and write about bourbon, we took the few bottles that were easy to find over here and we set out into the unknown.

Fast forward to today and those few bottles have grown into a collection of hundreds (and our bank balances have gone the opposite way), we have interacted with some legends of the bourbon world, and met a lot of great whiskey-loving friends along the way, but… we still consider ourselves amateurs, and probably always will.

Our approach has always been to put honesty first. We don’t invent smells and tastes we don’t find in the glass. We don’t give bourbons a good score because we want to grow followers or curry favour with a distillery. In fact we are probably the only bourbon/whiskey site out there that doesn’t accept advertising. You will never see an outside advert, banner, or a link to go buy something on our pages.

We also like to keep things casual and down to earth as we know that not everyone has been drinking whiskey for years and is familiar with all the industry lingo.

So if you have been with us since the start, or if you are just finding us today, then welcome to our home of bourbon & whisky, stay as long as you like and come back whenever you want.

The Bourbon Gent's door is always open.
